Waitangi Treaty Grounds and a Maori Cultural Show

The new Maori Cultural Show at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is amazing.  Today is the perfect day to share my photos of our visit last week, as it is Waitangi Day in New Zealand, a holiday commemorating the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840.

First a Greeting and Welcome to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds:

Then we entered the marae (meeting house) for the cultural show:

Finally, a photo opportunity.  This is my niece, hubby and myself with a Maori warrior inside the marae at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds:

**A Northern New Zealand Travel Tip: If you are traveling in Northern New Zealand and heading to the Bay of Islands, I highly recommend a visit to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds which includes both the tour and the cultural show.

A bit of the history of Waitangi Treaty Grounds

(for those who want a few words):
The Treaty of Waitangi was initially signed on 6 Feb, 1840 by the British and the Maori Chiefs at Waitangi Treaty Grounds. Simplified, the treaty made New Zealand a part of the British Empire, guaranteed Māori rights to their land and gave Māori the rights of British subjects. Still today there are on-going debates as to what was agreed upon as there are differences between the English version and the Māori translation of the Treaty.
