Photos: Birds on Muriwai Beach, NZ – Gannets, Shags, Oystercatchers

Seeing the birds on Muriwai Beach is an annual event for our family. Australian gannets breed here every year in our New Zealand summer. Last year we viewed the gannets from the cliffs above. This year I shot them from the ground looking up.

Since it’s already Wednesday in New Zealand, I present these birds of Muriwai Beach for Wordless Wednesday.

I am still getting used to my new Olympus OM-D E-M5 camera. So far, I really like it.

Gannets, Shags or Oystercatchers, which is favorite of the birds on Muriwai Beach? What do you think of my new micro 4/3 camera?

The Australian Gannets fly the 2000km and breed in three spots in New Zealand every year. This is one of them. They are here for only a few months of the year, but they are amazing.

Going well with the new one Rhonda!! The second, with the shadow gannet is my absolute fave; the composition is about perfect in that and the dramatic surf is something else!

Do drop by here tomorrow and link up for Wings on Wednesday…this is a definite WoW candidate!! YAM xx

Thanks, what a wonderful compliment. I have been focused on photography this year, taking workshops, reading and mostly just getting out and shooting. “Perfect” is not a word I though I would see for a very long time, even with the “about” in front of it.

Beautiful photos of birds! We have some very confused seagulls hanging around us in the Pittsburgh area. It’s really weird!! lol

Great question, so I looked it up:
Gannets are seabirds comprising the genus Morus, in the family Sulidae, closely related to boobies. These are Australian Gannets that breed in New Zealand.

Gulls or seagulls are seabirds of the family Laridae in the sub-order Lari. They are most closely related to the terns and only distantly related to auks, skimmers, and more distantly to the waders.

I think you were quite adventure being underneath them, I don’t know if they are like seagulls that are shitting all the time. Or were you looking for a funny picture? ;)

After just arriving in India, a bird shit on one of my friends (the one that was most worried about getting dirty). He was so disgusted that went back to the hostel to take a shower! Since them I see birds and think about that day :-)
By the way after two weeks I changed my plans and let my “friend” alone in Goa :-)
