Newmarket is one of many Auckland city neighborhoods. It is often thought of as New Zealand’s premier retailing area. Like most of Auckland, it boasts an eclectic and interesting collection of city artwork. Walking down Broadway with my daughter, I couldn’t resist taking photos of these four Newmarket sculptures:
Generally, I research an area before I visit. However, with a familiar neighborhoods like Newmarket, I didn’t bother. I have walked down Broadway many times and have always been fascinated by the face on The World Grasped. Today, I learned it looks completely different from the other side. I can’t believe I never looked. I will have to go back, with a camera to get the other views.
Quoting Terry Stringer, the artist, “My sculpture has a series of images that are revealed to the viewer as they circle the work. From one direction is seen the head of a boy resting on his hand in thought. From another this hand is seen to be plucking an apple. And from a third direction, this apple is the world supported on the shoulders of Atlas.”
Which is your favorite of these Newmarket sculptures? Do you typically walk around artwork to view it from all sides? Does this artwork inspire you to get out and see your city?
