Being built on the remnants of 53 volcanoes, Auckland is a city with no shortage of great lookouts and viewing platforms. My favorite is the lookout tower in Shakepsear Park, as it is so close to home. However, for a closer view, I tend to bring guests to Mt. Victoria or North Head in Devonport. And for those looking for Auckland’s ultimate lookout, we go to the viewing platform on the observation deck of the Sky Tower.
A few of my favorite views – looking out, looking down or looking up:
Practical Information and Tips
- The Auckland Sky Tower may be the tallest man made structure in the Southern Hemisphere, but worldwide it doesn’t rate that tall. It stands approximately the same height as the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
- The Sky Tower and entrance to the Maritime Museum cost money, the other lookouts on this page are free.
- Take caution if driving up to the top of Mt. Victoria or North Head, remembering that most of the roads can have two way traffic.
Do you prefer to hike to a lookout spot, or go up a structure like the Sky Tower?
