Having recently tried my second pair of Xero shoes, I can honestly say that I have found the most comfortable lightweight walking shoes for travel or every day use. And I am not the only one. Xero shoes are worn by people in 94 countries. They use them for more than just travel. These are the perfect shoe for walking, hiking, everyday wear, and even running.
For travel, I want lightweight walking shoes that are comfortable and supportive. The natural designs move with my foot and meet all my needs.
The Hana is my newest pair of Xero Shoes. Yes, I know it’s a man’s style, but my feet run wide, so it is a perfect fit for me. So far, I have found Hana to be my best walking shoes for travel. Super lightweight, sturdy, yet they are flexible to let my foot make natural movements. As a bonus, they can be folded into a pocket. The wide toe box and non-elevated heel are good for my feet but more importantly, they make these the best shoes for walking.
Their lightweight design gives them a barefoot feel and it aids in my ability to pack light.
Xero’s environmentally friendly Hana shoes are latex and animal product free as well as being vegan-friendly. Xero also makes travel sandals, travel shoes, and travel boots.

Original DIY Invisible Shoes: The Best Walking Sandals for Travel
I have been a fan of these lightweight walking shoes for a long time. In fact, I got my first pair when the company was called Invisible Shoes®. They still offer this classic do it yourself shoe on their official webpage, but having both, I now prefer the current models shown above.
Here is what I had to say in 2012 about my first pair:
My Criteria for the Best Walking Shoes
My criteria for the best walking shoes for women or men has changed over the years, yet Invisible Shoes® meets them all, and not just for me, they are also travel shoes for my teen and tween:
- As a woman, I desire stylish travel shoes
- As a person living in New Zealand, I want to feel like I am barefoot
- As a person with a bad ankle, I look for proper fit and comfort
- As a traveller, I need lightweight shoes that are easy to pack
- As a homeschool mom, I seek educational and fun
- As a consumer, I want something which will last, and Invisible Shoes® offer a 5,000-mile warranty
- As a practical person, I shop for affordable shoes
According to their website, these DIY sandals are “a modern spin on the traditional barefoot running sandal.” I think of them as super huaraches – my favourite sandal and running shoe all combined in one.
Invisible Shoes® were fun even before they arrived. They are custom cut just for us, so the girls and I traced out and measured our feet, adding dots to mark toes and a few other spots. We were thrilled; this will be the first time that my wide feet will be able to wear the same type of shoes as my tween’s narrow feet. We also had the option of cutting them ourselves. Seemed simple enough, but we went for the super easy – have someone else do it method.
Right from the first moment the package arrived, I knew we had found something special. Three pairs of custom cut soles pre-strung with our selected lace colour. As the directions stated, they needed a bit of adjusting for the string tension to be right for our feet, or we could change the lacing.
Here is what we each created:
