Cable Car: #AtoZ Postcards of New Zealand

C is for Cable Car . . .  or climb.

Cable car in Wellington New Zealand

Practical Information:

  • On the “must see” list of most visitors to New Zealand’s capital city, the country’s only funicular railway runs from the centre of town on Lambton Quay up hill for 612m.
  • Once at the top you will find the Wellington Botanic Garden (free), the Cable Car Museum (free), and the Carter Observatory.
  • From the top you can take the cable car back down. I prefer to walk the downhill path through the botanic gardens back down to the city.

Posted for the AtoZ challenge 2016. Today is the last day to join us. There are 1,500+ bloggers worldwide participating this year. We will write daily blog posts (except Sunday), each based on the next sequential letter of the alphabet. I am following a theme this year: Postcards of New Zealand.

The first time I took the cable car up, I took it back down as well. The second time I took the cable car, I walked back down and I have been doing it that way ever since.

When we were living in New Zealand, my mother came for a visit and we did a land tour. One of our stops was (of course) Wellington and we did the cable car ride up to the museum and botanical garden. Thanks for stoking a great memory!

I was blessed to be able to visit New Zealand thirty years ago– the north island only, though. It’s one of the most beautiful countries in the world. You are so lucky to live there!

I love funiculars! Even the word says how great it is! Great pictures. I’ve never been to New Zealand but you’re making it tempting. I’m half Okinawan Japanese and keeping wanting to travel to that half of the earth (I’m in the U.S. now.) Happy April!

Nice post. Any funicular railway is cool. They are rebuilding the one in Los Angeles; Angles Flight. Good Luck on the A-Z

Although coming from Switzerland where cable cars are quite common I still enjoy it a lot. Especially it they bring you to car free villages in remote alpine regions. Maybe we’ll be able to check it out in NZ also once. #SundaysInMyCity
